“The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it’s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it’s indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference. Because of indifference, one dies before one actually dies. To be in the window and watch people being sent to concentration camps or being attacked in the street and do nothing, that’s being dead.”
—Elie Wiesel, 27 October 1986
After recently watching this documentary from the History Channel, “Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall”, I started looking up old news footage from the day it fell, 9 November 1989. It is incredibly moving to watch the happiness and tears of the people as they crossed the border, they could hardly believe that this was happening to them. Remember this day and the joy of reunification, what we humans are capable of when we do not harden our hearts and work for equal rights and justice. Divisions and walls fall like nothing at all – and they will fall again!
